What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is the ancient Chinese system of natural healing that is based upon the principal that physical dysfunction is the result of an imbalance of the body’s organic, energetic and natural activity. Today, acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine are used for preventive care, health maintenance and treatment of disease. The World Health Organization officially recognizes acupuncture as suitable for the treatment of over 200 common clinical disorders.

Traditional chinese medical theory explains that human beings have a natural flow of energy through the body. Disease is concidered to arise due to a defiency or imbalance of energy in the meridians and their associated physiological systems. This vital energy behind all life forms is called Qi, (also considered by some as Life Force). The goal of traditional Chinese medicine is to help restore balance or harmony to the flow of Qi and thus return the body to a healthy state. This holistic care - treating the body, mind and spirit- is something Chinese physicians have been doing for thousands of years.

Acupuncturists can use over 365 main acupuncture points throughout the body and insert needles to stimulate energy that is blocked or congested. The aim of acupuncture is to activate a patient’s vital energy to allow the body to balance and heal itself.
